Sun exposure can cause skin hyperpigmentation, problems such as dullness of the skin and skin discoloration. Age spots, acne spots, melasma and uneven complexion are some of the most common troubles.
Hyperpigmentation is when skin gets areas of increased melanin, causing it to have dark spots. The dark spots areas make the skin look blotchy. The good news is that restoring the natural glow of a weather-beaten skin is possible in easy way. You can lighten up your skin complexion in natural ways.
Skin lightening has become very popular because of its ability to improve the face appearance and continuity of color in skin.
Using natural skin whiteners made out of products normally found in homes, you can lighten your skin and reduce hyperpigmentation without the risks of chemical burns that are associated with some commercial skin whiteners where chemical products are sometimes too much concentrated.
Unfortunately, there is much controversy because the most prominent products used to lighten the skin may be harmful.
Skin whitening products are available in bar soaps, lotions, pills and creams. So their actions can be external or internal. The controversial ingredient used in many of these products is called hydroquinone.
Hydroquinone has the ability to inhibit the production of melanin which is responsible for skin pigmentation. It is very effective at whitening the skin but excessive amounts can lead to darker, thicker skin and disorders of the blood, because of skin reactions. Studies conducted with hydroquinone have shown that it causes leukemia in mice and other laboratory animals.
How to Lighten Your Skin Naturally
Natural products that work in a similar manner to hydroquinone are Alpha hydroxy acids, kojic acid, azelaic acid, glutathione, tretinoin, arbutin, niacinamide, licorice extract, vitamin C, uva ursi (bearberry) extract, scaber extract, morus bombycis (mulberry) (bearberry) extract, broussonetia papyrifera (paper mulberry), morus alba (white mulberry) and extrapone nutgrass.
1. Prepare a Natural Skin Lightening Cream
Avoid exposing your skin to direct sunlight. Use sunscreen (20 SPF +) heavily to protect your skin and help retain its tone. Wash your skin twice a day with a mild soap and a washcloth. Use the washcloth to rub the soap in the skin and to rinse the soap off the skin. The washcloth mildly exfoliates the skin to encourage the shedding of dead cells.
2. Exfoliate at Least Once a Week
Get rid of dead skin cells by exfoliating at least once a week. Exfoliation is more important if your skin is developing dark spots, freckles and skin damages due to old age. Dead cell removal naturally lightens your skin complexion. The skin will also appear brighter as you continue with this practice for over a month.
Take two tablespoons each of brown sugar and oatmeal and mix them with a quarter cup of milk.
Thoroughly stir the mixture until you get a semi-solid paste.
Start scrubbing your face slowly by using this paste. Be as gentle as possible. Scrubbing shouldn’t result in further skin damage.
When you are finished with scrubbing, rinse your face with clean water and apply a moisturizer in the end.
3. Make a Mask
A homemade mask is a great way to lighten your skin and a good excuse to kick back on the couch. Try using one once a week. Use one tablespoon of each of the following: sandalwood paste, lemon juice, tomato juice, and cucumber juice. Mix them all together to form a paste. Spread the mixture on your face and wait until it dries. Rinse and moisturize for a natural glow.
It is very easy to make a bleaching mask at home.
- Take a glass of boiling water and steep a teaspoon dried fennel in it.
- Wait for at least 40-60 minutes. After about one hour, remove all herbal stuff from the glass of water.
- Add a tablespoon of buttermilk to this water. Directly apply the water and buttermilk mixture on your face in a gentle manner.
- Let the bleaching mask stay on your face for at least 15-20 minute and rinse with clean water.
Your skin is a part of who you are. It is one of a few things that make you unique and beautiful. Take a good care of your skin by following skin lightening tips mentioned above and remember to love it no matter what color it is.
4. Use Licorice Extract
Licorice extract contains glabridin, a component that acts as a natural skin whitener. Apply a thin layer of the extract morning and evening, after you wash your face and before you moisturize. Licorice extract can be found at any health food store or ordered online. Be sure to store the bottle in a cool, dark place to maintain freshness. Note: test a small amount on the back of your arm before using on your face to be sure you do not have an allergic reaction.
